How to Avoid Bright and Shiny Object Syndrome

Uncategorized May 07, 2019

Hi, my name is Melanie and I have Bright and Shiny Object Syndrome. It's true. I wish I didn't, but I have it. The first step in dealing with Bright and Shiny Object Syndrome is awareness, and the second step is acknowledgment.

It's probably been about three years since I realized this was creating challenges in my business. I'd start working on a new initiative and get all excited only to soon get distracted by a new idea.

The same went for some of the productivity apps I was using in my business. I spent about four months exploring project management apps before I finally landed on my two of choice, Trello and Asana. I seriously tried around 5 or 6 of them.

Once I really saw that my syndrome was limiting my progression in business, I started to work on finding ways to mitigate my tendencies.

It's important to finish projects, see things through, stay the course, work on one thing at a time. Yada yada yada. We all know this to be true, but sometimes it's hard to follow through.

I've been getting a lot better and I have four strategies that are helping me. In this Facebook Live I did on my page, I share those strategies. You can check it out below but the down and dirty is this:

  1. Cut your goal in half.
  2. Make the next big thing your reward for finishing what you're working on now.
  3. Say "No" so you can say "Yes."
  4. Find your power hour, or your power hours.

If you can relate to Bright and Shiny Object Syndrome, then I hope this was helpful. Do you have tips that have worked for you?
